NAIDOC Week: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy

This week is NAIDOC Week (Sunday 6 July to Sunday 13 July 2025). Across Australia celebrations and events are being held to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In 2025 NAIDOC Week reaches a milestone of 50 years of honoring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience. This year the theme for NAIDOC Week is, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.

This theme celebrates both the achievements of the past and the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of young leaders, the vision of communities, and the legacy of ancestors.

The NAIDOC website features a range of educational resources to support learning, along with information about the history of NAIDOC Week and local events. This year National NAIDOC Committee and Culture is Life have partnered with ABC Education to develop the official National NAIDOC Education Resources for 2025.

These resources can be accessed here.

The ABC also has a wide range of NAIDOC Week resources available here on the ABC Kids website.

We at Family Day Care Australia acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live and work, the Darkinjung People, and pay our respects to their Elders past and present. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, and celebrate their traditions and living cultures.

Caring for Relatives

Child Care Subsidy (CCS) must not be claimed when an educator is caring for close family members. This includes the educator’s or their partner’s:

  • Child, foster child, adopted child, kinship child or any child for which you have legal responsibility, or
  • Brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, step-brother or step-sister.

Educators may be able to report CCS eligible sessions for extended family members (educator’s or their partner’s niece, nephew, cousin, grandchild or great-grandchild) if this is the case the less than 50% rule must be enforced.

When calculating the 50% rule, you must count all children enrolled in a session of care for the fortnight regardless of whether they attended care.

The Australian Government Department of Education has developed a video explaining the rules for family day care educators who care for relatives in their extended family, which you can view here.
