Next Week is National Family Day Care Week

This coming Monday 5th May marks the beginning of National Family Day Care Week!

National Family Day Care Week from 5-11 May, is about recognising and promoting the important role family day care educators and services play in the development and wellbeing of more than 71,000 children across Australia.

During the week we’re asking all of our members to share your photos on social media using the official hashtag, #fdcweek25. This helps raise the profile of family day care and highlights the unique benefits of the small group settings, personalised educational programming and flexible hours of care that family day care provides.

The annual celebration generates nationwide media, highlighting the many unique benefits of family day care and positioning our sector as a high quality, flexible early childhood education and care option for Australian families.

For programming ideas during National Family Day Care Week visit the FDCA website here. A range of resources are also available to download from the FDCA website, by clicking here.

If you’re a Canva user, you can download new customisable National Family Day Care Week templates that you can use on social media. To access these templates, click on the links below:

By using the Canva templates and official hashtag, #fdcweek25, on social media you’ll help us raise the profile of family day care.

Are you confident that your policies are not just read - but understood and followed?

Policies and procedures are more than just a document - they form the legal foundation for consistent, safe and high-quality practice.

When implemented well, they underpin service delivery, provide certainty to families and support staff and educators in understanding their roles and responsibilities by clearly establishing professional standards and expectations.

One of the most common breaches in family day care settings relates to Regulation 170: Policies and procedures to be followed. Under this regulation, the approved provider must take reasonable steps to ensure that the nominated supervisor, staff members and educators are aware of, understand and follow the required policies and procedures outlined in Regulations 168 and 169.

Key Points to Remember:

  1. Ensure everyone knows your policies and how to access them – everyone in the service should know what the policies and procedures are and where to find them.
  2. Use them to guide best practice – policies support decision making and help to ensure consistent and high-quality practice delivery across the service.
  3. Understanding policies is a shared responsibility – educators and service staff are expected to read, understand and apply policies in daily practice, while services must have clear systems in place to implement and monitor them.
  4. Policies help protect us - they are designed to identify and minimise risk, while safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of children, staff and educators.

Responses to FDCA’s Request for Election Policy Commitments

Following on from extensive consultation with members, in early March 2025 FDCA submitted a Request for Election Policy Commitments for the Family Day Care Sector to Australia's major political parties ahead of the 2025 federal election and asked them to respond. The Election Policy Commitments document provided Australia’s major political parties with a range of targeted initiatives and opportunities that will better leverage the capacity and unique strengths of the family day care sector.

In the past weeks, FDCA CEO Andrew Paterson has held a number of face-to-face meetings with the Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education, and Ms Angie Bell, Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education, to discuss the election policy commitments and emphasise the importance of supporting viability and investment in family day care.

FDCA has now received responses from both the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the Liberal National Party (LNP). No response was received from the Greens. Please note: the LNP provided a response in letter form only rather than a response to the form provided.

Please take the time out of your busy schedule to be informed ahead of the upcoming election regarding what the major parties are willing, or unwilling, to commit to for the family day care sector before you cast your vote!

Family Day Care Pre-Election Forum Recording Available

If you missed last week’s Family Day Care Pre-Election Forum, a recording is now available to view on the FDCA website.

Hosted by Family Day Care Australia (FDCA) CEO Andrew Paterson, the forum features The Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education and Angie Bell MP, the Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education.
