What is National Family Day Care Week?

National Family Day Care Week is one of the most important events on the family day care calendar, spreading awareness of the vital role family day care educators and services play in the development and wellbeing of over 93,000 Australian children.

10 Years of National Family Day Care Week

Over its 10 years, National Family Day Care Week has inspired more than 360 positive media stories on the family day care sector, reaching 4 million Australians!

By registering a picnic and sharing your celebrations on social media using the official hashtag, #FDCWeek2022, you’ll join the only nation-wide birthday party dedicated to recognising the enormous contributions that family day care makes to Australian children, families and communities each and every day.

National Family Day Care Week also continues to promote positive media coverage on the sector, which is an important part of our ongoing commitment to position family day care as the natural choice in high quality education and care for more Australian families.

Children’s mental health in family day care  – New online program

Register now for the new professional development program, Supporting the mental health of children, developed to help build the capacity of family day care educators, managers and coordinators to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in children.

Spearheaded by the national mental health institute, Everymind, with support from Family Day Care Australia (FDCA), the first-of-its-kind program offers research driven tools and techniques that have been specifically tailored for family day care.

The new online program aims to deliver professional development approaches to build confidence when talking to children about mental health and wellbeing, while encouraging educators, managers and coordinators to reflect on and look after their mental health.

There are six self-paced modules, plus the newly created Managers and Coordinators module, exploring various early childhood education and care practice areas. These align with the National Quality Standard, the Early Years Learning Framework for Australia and the My Time, Our Place Framework.

The professional development program is available to educators, service managers and coordinators free of charge and can be accessed by completing the registration survey here.

To find out more about this initiative, visit the FDCA website or hop onto the Everymind website.

Thanks to Everymind for their continued support of wellbeing in the family day care sector. We look forward to future initiatives in this space as part of our commitment to supporting you to thrive in every aspect of your business.

Tailored professional development for family day care

Each workshop will have an emphasis on the role of services and educators, providing valuable insights for all participants and a holistic approach to child safety. This ticks an important box in terms of assisting services and educators to meet both their professional development obligations under Element 7.2.3 of the NQS, and their child safety and child protection obligations under Standard 2.2 and Element 2.2.3.

Helping you to access premium professional development and learning, while providing opportunities to network with fellow family day care professionals and discuss the issues that matter to you, is an important part of the work that we do as your national peak body. Through the National Engagement Program, we’re proud to continue our investment into this important initiative.

The 2022 National Engagement Program will allow members to take advantage of joint educator and service sessions, giving teams the chance to come together and share in the benefits of joint professional development workshops unique to the family day care environment.

Stage 3 of the Approved Learning Frameworks Update project is underway

Stage 3 of the 2021 Approved Learning Frameworks Update project has commenced, involving the piloting of potential areas for updating the Approved Learning Frameworks (ALFs) in 16 services across Australia.

From January to March 2022, a group of service providers and practitioners that has been involved across the course of the project is piloting potential updates to the ALFs.

About the project

A national Consortia led by a partnership between Macquarie University, Queensland University of Technology and Edith Cowan University was engaged by ACECQA, on behalf of all governments, to deliver the 2021 National Quality Framework (NQF) Approved Learning Frameworks (ALFs) Update project.

The project commenced in April 2021 and has been delivered over three stages.

The purpose of the ALFs Update project is to strengthen the connection between the ALFs and National Quality Standard in areas such as transitions, sustainability, theoretical approaches, critical reflection, the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of being, knowing and doing, and inclusion.

The Consortia’s findings and the feedback from the pilots in Stage 3 will inform recommendations to Education Ministers in mid-2022.

To read more about the project visit the Approved Learning Frameworks Update website.
