We encourage you to watch the update via our social media channels to stay across these important developments.

These matters are ongoing, and we remain actively engaged. We will continue to keep members informed as further updates become available.

National Family Day Care Week 2026 Coming Soon!

From 4–10 May 2026, we’re coming together across the country to celebrate everything that makes family day care extraordinary and we want you to be part of it.

This year, we’re calling on every FDCA member to host a National Family Day Care Week Picnic and proudly showcase the impact you make in the lives of children and families every single day.

Whether it’s a picnic in the park, an afternoon tea, a BBQ or a community get-together, your event becomes part of a powerful, national celebration.

Why get involved?

Because when we celebrate together, our message is louder.

Every registered picnic is supported by media releases issued by FDCA. The more events we have across the country, the stronger our story becomes and the greater the chance of media coverage shining a spotlight on family day care in your community.

This is our opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness of family day care locally
  • Strengthen recognition of our sector nationally
  • Celebrate the incredible work of educators and services
  • Show families why family day care is the care of choice

The first 200 FDCA members to register their picnic will receive a FREE National Family Day Care Week Picnic Pack to help bring your celebration to life.

Keep an eye out for the official launch of National Family Day Care Week in the coming days.

National Child Safety Training Now Available

The first component of new, mandatory, national child safety training is now live.  The training, that has been developed by the Queensland Government and the Australian Centre for Child Protection, has two components:

  • Foundation training - which is available now
  • Advanced training - available from July 2026.

The following people involved in family day care must complete the training:

  • Persons with management or control (PMC)
  • Nominated supervisors
  • Persons in day-to-day charge
  • Educators
  • Other staff, volunteers and students.

Those noted above that are already in these roles must complete foundation training by 27 August 2026. Those new to family day care from 14 August 2026 must complete foundation training by whichever occurs earlier:

  • 27 August 2026, or
  • 14 days from when they are employed by the service, or
  • before they work directly with children.

Foundation training must then be completed once every 2 years.

To access and complete the training, all users must have an individual Geccko account. If you do not yet have a Geccko account, you can register here.

Visit the Department of Education website for assistance and the Australian Centre for Child Protection website for further information.

National Workforce Reference Group Update

On 17th February, the most recent National Workforce Reference Group (WRG) meeting was held, with family day care representative Pamela Timire in attendance.

Announced by the Minister for Early Childhood Education, Senator the Hon Dr Jess Walsh, in October 2025, the WRG brings together early childhood teachers and educators from across Australia to collaborate with the Government to provide insights and recommendations on current and emerging issues across the ECEC sector.

Ahead of the meeting, family day care educators were invited to share their perspectives through a FDCA survey to help inform the discussion. These insights supported Pamela in representing the experiences of family day care educators during the meeting.

Several key topics were discussed, including:

  • An AERO Presentation on findings from the 2023 national educator survey examining educator retention in ECEC
  • Educator to child ratios
  • Workforce retention, sustainability and sector pressures
  • Professional recognition and training quality
  • Educator wellbeing and mental health
  • Career pathways
  • Child safety legislative reforms and measures under the National Quality Framework.

From a family day care perspective, several issues were raised with the group, which included:

  • Findings from the AERO educator retention survey, which indicated that many educators reported feeling valued, appreciated and respected within their communities. However, based on FDCA’s survey findings, this did not fully reflect the experiences of home-based educators, with many often feeling like they are viewed as babysitters rather than qualified professionals.
  • Pamela highlighted that FDCA’s educator survey found that educators are seeking greater professional recognition and value for their contribution to the ECEC sector and that recognition supports visibility, respect, workforce confidence, and ultimately the long-term sustainability of the sector.
  • A request to review how CCS cap settings and broader funding arrangements impact the viability and long-term sustainability of services.
  • Pamela highlighted findings from FDCA’s survey that expressed the need to explore targeted financial support for home-based educators, including recognition of administrative hours and access to relief funding. This being particularly important for educators in regional and rural communities, where demand for services is high and families often require flexible, non-standard hours of care.
  • Pamela also shared ideas from the FDCA survey on financial incentives, flexible earn-while-you-learn and passed on feedback from educators regarding the impact of the administrative workload on educators’ mental health and wellbeing as sole operators working from their own homes.

Pamela would like to thank all the educators that took the time out of their busy schedules to contribute their perspectives through the FDCA educator survey.
